A simple model for freezing rain ice loads

چکیده

There are many models for hindcasting ice loads from meteorological data measured during freezing rain storms. Each model is based on the physics of the ice accretion process and on empirical observations. However, these models predict significantly different ice loads for the same freezing rain storm, making it difficult to use model results to determine design ice loads. In this paper, we describe a simple ice load model that can be used to make conservative back-of-the-envelope calculations of ice loads based on the precipitation rate and wind speed. Using historical weather data from Springfield, IL, we compare the ice loads from this model with those from other models and discuss the reasons for the differences between them. We also compare the modeled and measured ice loads from one well-documented storm that occurred at CRREL’s freezing rain weather station. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Forecasting severe ice storms using numerical weather prediction: the March 2010 Newfoundland event

The northeast coast of North America is frequently hit by severe ice storms. These freezing rain events can produce large ice accretions that damage structures, frequently power transmission and distribution infrastructure. For this reason, it is highly desirable to model and forecast such icing events, so that the consequent damages can be prevented or mitigated. The case study presented in th...

A Predictive Indicator of Icing Damage Risk

The ability to predict severe ice storm events is an essential step to prevent or mitigate power grid outages caused by extreme wind and ice loads. We have shown previously that an Ice Accretion Forecasting System (IAFS) can predict severe ice storms several days in advance. However, identifying the storms’ maximum intensities and localizing their epicentres remain challenges to be addressed. I...

A Dual-Polarization Radar Hydrometeor Classification Algorithm for Winter Precipitation

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the use of polarimetric observations in a radar-based winter hydrometeor classification algorithm. This is accomplished by deriving bulk electromagnetic scattering properties of stratiform, cold-season rain, freezing rain, sleet, dry aggregated snowflakes, dendritic snow crystals, and platelike snow crystals at X-, C-, and S-band wavelengths based on ...

Observations of Wintertime U.S. West Coast Precipitating Systems with W-Band Satellite Radar and Other Spaceborne Instruments

The potential of CloudSat W-band radar for observing wintertime storms affecting the West Coast of North America is evaluated. Storms having high hydrological impact often result from landfalls of ‘‘atmospheric rivers’’ (‘‘ARs’’), which are the narrow elongated regions of water vapor transport from the tropics. CloudSat measurements are used for retrievals of rain rate R and cloud ice water pat...
